ShuMag

Help

ShuMag lets you share your kids' drop-off and pick-up schedule with your family, just like magnets on the fridge. Here's how to use the basics.

1. What you can do with ShuMag

For different times on different days, places that close on holidays, and other family situations, see 4. Making it fit your family.

2. Getting started

If you're making a board for the first time

  1. Open the app and choose "Get started" (you can change the board name later)
  2. Add your kids (name and icon)
  3. Add the places your kids go, such as after-school care, after-school day programs, lessons, or tutoring (name and color)
  4. Pick the days your kid goes to that place. Choose "Every week" or "Certain weeks" (which weeks of the month), then pick the days
  5. Set the start and end times for that place, then tap "Done". When you open the board, magnets are lined up on the days you picked

You can set the days and times later. The days screen and the times screen both have a "Later" button. To set them later, go to the gear icon (Settings) > Regular magnets > tap the place name, and fill in "Regular schedule".

Besides days and times, "Regular schedule" can also hold the kids who usually go, the location, the drivers, and reminders. When you place a magnet by hand, it starts with all of this filled in. If magnets are already on the board, you can choose whether your changes apply starting this week or next week.

If a family member invited you

  1. Have the invite code from your family ready, and open the app
  2. On the first screen, choose "Join with an invite code" and enter the code. You'll see the board you're joining, your name, and your role (editor or viewer)
  3. Choose "Join", and your family's board appears as is. You don't need to add kids or places

3. Using it each week

4. Making it fit your family

Here's how to set things up for your family's situation. Only the board owner (at first, the person who made the board) can change place settings.

When times or drivers differ by day

Each place can have only one "Usual time" and one set of drivers. If you duplicate a place, you can split its "Regular schedule" by day. For example, if your kid goes Mon–Thu from 4:00 PM but only from 2:00 PM on Fri, follow these steps.

  1. Go to the gear icon (Settings) > Regular magnets > tap the place you use for Mon–Thu, then choose "Duplicate this magnet" at the bottom of the screen
  2. Open the new "[place name] copy", set "Repeat pattern" to Fri only, and set "Usual time" to 2:00 PM. You can also rename the place

If the drivers differ by day, you can split them the same way.
*A duplicated place counts as one place toward your limit.

When siblings go at different times or have different drivers

Each place can have only one "Usual time", so if siblings go at different times, duplicate the place and split it by kid. For example, if the older kid stays until 5:00 PM and the younger kid until 4:00 PM, follow these steps.

  1. Go to the gear icon (Settings) > Regular magnets > tap the place name, then choose "Duplicate this magnet" at the bottom of the screen
  2. Open the new "[place name] copy", set "Kids who usually go" to the younger kid only, and set the end of "Usual time" to 4:00 PM
  3. In the original place, set "Kids who usually go" to the older kid only

If the drivers differ by kid, you can split them the same way.

When your kid goes only on certain weeks, like twice a month

In "Repeat pattern", tap "Repeat" and choose "Certain weeks". Then you can pick which weeks to go, from the 1st to the 5th week of the month. For example, for a lesson on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays only, choose "2nd", "4th", and "Sat".

When the location changes by day, like a practice field

Save the usual location in the place's "Usual location" (gear icon (Settings) > Regular magnets > tap the place name). Magnets on the board are placed with this location filled in.

On days with a different location, tap that day's magnet and change "Location". Locations you've entered recently show up as suggestions below the field, so next time you can just tap one. To go back to the usual location, tap the suggestion marked "Usual".

The location also shows in notifications.

When the kids who go change from week to week

In the Regular magnet, leave "Kids who usually go" empty and set only "Repeat pattern" and "Usual time". Magnets without kids are then placed on the board. Once you know who's going, tap that day's magnet and pick from the kids' names at the top. You can pick 2 or more.

Magnets without kids still show when you filter by kid at the top of the board.

When there are holidays or days the place is closed

ShuMag doesn't know about holidays, so magnets from "Regular schedule" are placed on holidays too. On days off, remove that day's magnet as shown in Delete a plan. Only that week's magnet is removed. From the next week, it's placed as usual.

When your kid quits a lesson

If you delete a place, all of its magnets are deleted too, including past ones. To keep past records, don't delete the place. Instead, tap "Clear" in "Repeat pattern" and save. Magnets stop being placed automatically, and past magnets stay as they are.
*A place you keep still counts toward your limit.

When you delete a kid

If you delete a kid (gear icon (Settings) > Kids > tap the name > "Delete"), all plans for only that kid are deleted, including past records. Plans shared with other kids stay. To keep the records, don't delete the kid.

5. Inviting family and removing them from the board

Invite family

  1. In Settings, add the person's name under "Drivers" (e.g. Dad, Grandma)
  2. In "Account", go to "Board sharing" to create an invite code, and pick the name you added
  3. Send the invite code by text or a messaging app like LINE (the code lasts 72 hours)
  4. The person installs the app, chooses "Join with an invite code" on the first screen, and enters the code to join the same board

Family members who join get one of 2 roles. Editors can place and change magnets. Viewers can see the board and get notifications. You can choose editor only while you're on a paid plan. On a Free plan board, invited people join as viewers.

Remove family from the board

In Settings, go to "Drivers", tap the name of a family member who joined, and choose "Remove from board". Only the board owner can do this.

People you remove can no longer see this board. Their driver name and past assignments stay, so you can invite them again later.

Family members who want to leave on their own can use "Leave board" at the very bottom of "Account".

6. Transferring ownership

The board owner can change place settings, invite family or remove them from the board, and buy plans. To hand ownership to someone else in the family, go to "Drivers" in Settings, tap the name of a family member who joined, and choose "Transfer ownership". Only the board owner can do this.

After you transfer ownership, you stay on the board as an editor on a paid plan, or as a viewer on the Free plan.

7. Notifications

If notifications don't come: Check that notifications for ShuMag are allowed in your iPhone's "Settings". While Focus or Low Power Mode is on, notifications may be late or may not show.

8. Widgets

You can show your drop-off and pick-up plans on the Home Screen or Lock Screen. Without opening the app, you can see your next plan, or the week's plans and drivers. Widgets work on iPhone and iPad with iOS 17 or later.

Add to the Home Screen

  1. Press and hold an empty spot on the Home Screen
  2. Tap "Edit" at the top left, then choose "Add Widget" (on iOS 17, tap "+" at the top left)
  3. Choose "ShuMag" from the list, swipe left or right to pick a type, then tap "Add Widget"

Add to the Lock Screen

  1. Press and hold the Lock Screen, tap "Customize", then choose "Lock Screen"
  2. Tap the area below the clock, then under "ShuMag", choose "Next event" or "Coming up"

Filter by kid or driver

Press and hold a widget you've added and choose "Edit Widget" to pick which kids and drivers to show. Showing only the plans you drive is a handy option.

When the widget updates

Anything based on the time (the time bar, switching to the next plan) is always up to date. When someone in your family changes a plan, the widget switches to the new info on its own after a while. To see how current the info is, check the "As of" time at the bottom right of a Home Screen widget. To update it right away, open the app.

9. Moving to a new phone

  1. On your current phone: In Settings, open "Account" and add your email under "Backup email" (you'll get a verification code)
  2. On your new phone: Install the app, choose "Restore from another device (email)" on the first screen, and enter the email you added
  3. Enter the code sent to your email, and your board is restored as it was
  4. If your plan isn't back: Go to Settings (the gear at the top left of the board) > "Account" > "Plan", and tap "View or change plan", then "Restore purchases" at the bottom (owner only)

To use your previous board, first sign in with your backup email. If your plan isn't back, then restore purchases.

We recommend adding your email ahead of time, in case your phone breaks.

10. FAQ

Q. Changes my family made aren't showing up

Pull down on the board, or tap the refresh icon at the top right. While the app is open, changes usually show up on their own.

Q. "Please update" appears and I can't use the app

Your version is too old and no longer works. Tap "Update now", or open ShuMag in the App Store and update it. Your data is still there.

Q. I'm not getting notifications

Try the checks in section 7, Notifications. Also, iPhone limits how many notifications an app can schedule ahead. So if you don't open the app for a while, later notifications don't get set. If you open the app once a week, your notifications stay set without a break.

Q. I got a notification that says "Please open the app"

Open ShuMag. iPhone limits how many notifications an app can schedule ahead. When you open the app, upcoming notifications are set again. Each time you open the app, it sets notifications for this week and next week. If you don't open it for a while, this notice arrives at 3:00 PM on the last day that was set (Saturday). If you open the app once a week, you won't get this notification.

Q. The widget says "Open the app to refresh"

Open the ShuMag app. To load your family's plans, the widget needs you to open the app at least once every 2 weeks. Once you open the app, your plans show up again.

Q. ShuMag isn't in the widget list

Widgets work on iOS 17 or later. Check your iOS version in your iPhone's "Settings" > "General" > "About".

Q. Can I see past plans?

Swipe the board, or pick a week from the date at the top, to go back to past weeks (how far back you can go depends on your plan).

Q. Is there a one-time purchase plan?

Yes. The Lifetime plan is a one-time payment that lets you use Standard features forever. To share with 3 or more people, you can add the monthly Family upgrade to Lifetime. If you plan to use ShuMag for a long time, Lifetime plus the upgrade can cost less than the monthly Family plan. You can see the prices in the app.

Q. I want to switch from a monthly plan to Lifetime

In the app, go to Settings (the gear at the top left of the board) > "Account" > "Plan" > "View or change plan" to buy the Lifetime plan anytime (you can choose the Family upgrade on the same screen). Only the board owner can buy it.

Your current monthly or yearly plan won't stop on its own. To avoid being charged twice, cancel it in your App Store subscription settings after you buy. After you cancel, you can keep using its features until your next renewal date.

Q. I want to cancel my paid plan

You can cancel in your App Store subscription settings. After you cancel, you can keep using paid features until your next renewal date.

Q. What happens if I go back to the Free plan?

Your data stays. But anything over the Free plan limits (*) works like this.
*1 kid, 2 Regular magnets, 3 Occasional magnets, 2 drivers

The items that count as over the limit are the ones listed lower down in Settings under "Kids", "Regular magnets", "Occasional magnets", and "Drivers".

If you subscribe again, everything works as before. The locks come off, and family members who were editors, or who were invited as editors, become editors again.

Q. I want to delete my account

Tap "Delete account" at the very bottom of "Account" in Settings. If other family members are on your board, first transfer ownership to someone else from "Drivers." If you're not the owner, this button shows "Leave board" instead. Deleting the app alone doesn't delete your account or data.

Q. What happens if I delete my account while on a paid plan?

Paid plans are managed by the App Store (your Apple Account), so deleting your account doesn't cancel your subscription. First cancel it in your App Store subscription settings, then delete your account.

Q. Can people outside my family see our plans?

No. Only family members on the same board can see them. For details, see our Privacy Policy.
